Andrew Sheldon of STAR participates in “Summit at the University of Mississippi that Addresses Racial Violence:” “By and large, the lynchings have stopped and racial violence is no longer commonplace. The consequences of both, however, are still felt across the country. MPB's Sandra Knispel reports on a regional summit on racial violence and reconciliation at the University of Mississippi this past weekend.” (See Source)

Students in Georgia State University’s Introductory Public History Seminar are getting real-life public history experience this fall by engaging in research projects intended to enrich the historical record and to assist the efforts of other members of the Coalition to Remember the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot.

Student projects include research being done on the lives of specific individuals who lived through or were killed in the riot, research on the interiors of the city’s trolleys – a location of significant violence -- in 1906, a compilation of extant archaeological information related to neighborhoods in the riot zones, attempts to compile detailed information about the business and residential landscapes of these neighborhoods, a search for quilts and other period textiles, and a project that hopes to determine the economic impact of the riot on African American entrepreneurs.

At the end of the semester students and their professor, Dr. Alecia Long, will compile their findings and make them available to other members of the Coalition. If you have questions about this project please feel free to contact Professor Long at Georgia State University at (404-463-9924) or hisapl@langate.gsu.edu.
